Guide

How it works

Working out hours by hand is fiddly because time is in base 60, not base 10. From 9:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours and 30 minutes, which is 8.5 hours in decimal, not 8.3. This calculator handles both the clock format and the decimal format that payroll systems use.

How it works: Total time = end time minus start time, minus any unpaid break. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift runs past midnight and adds a day, so overnight shifts come out right.

Enter an hourly rate to also see estimated gross pay for the shift. This is pay before tax and other deductions, so your take-home amount will be lower.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?expand_more

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. The calculator shows both the clock format and the decimal format for you.

Does it handle overnight or night shifts?expand_more

Yes. If your end time is earlier than your start time, for example 22:00 to 06:00, the calculator assumes the shift crosses midnight and adds 24 hours, giving the correct total.

Should I subtract my lunch break?expand_more

If your break is unpaid, enter it in the break field so it is removed from the total. If your break is paid, leave the field at zero so the full shift counts.

Is the pay figure my take-home amount?expand_more

No. The pay figure is gross pay, before income tax, payroll taxes, pension or retirement contributions, and other deductions. Your actual take-home pay will be lower. This is an estimate, not payroll or tax advice.
